Obituary of Edward Berkowitz
Edward Leonard Berkowitz died Wednesday, September 6 at Mercy Hospital, Scranton, after a long, courageous battle with numerous medical problems.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Isadore Berkowitz and the late Gussie Sternheim.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dr. Helen Heeren, who was his devoted caregiver and the fierce protector of his welfare.
He graduated from Brooklyn College, received his Masters Degree from Columbia University and completed his Doctoral Degree (ABD) at Columbia University.
His professional career included a private practice of psychotherapy in Manhattan. He was a professor at Hunter College of the University of the City of New York and he also held the position of Director of Clinical Training at numerous organizations, including New York Medical College, Westchester County MRI, and the Jewish Guild for the Blind in New York. He developed professional training videos regarding the provision of psychotherapy services to developmentally disabled adults.
He was the much beloved leader of a book group at the Hughes Library in Stroudsburg.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Kenneth Berkowitz and his wife, Bridget Meeds and their son Duffy Berkowitz. Additionally he is survived by a daughter, Jane Roberti and her husband, Brian and their daughter Lauren Roberti; and one sister, Selma Greenberg.
