Obituary of John Matthews

John Joseph Matthews, Sr., 66, of Pocono Lake, died Saturday, October 31 at Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Beverly (Brown) Matthews. Born on October 3, 1943 in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Edward and Isabel (Moran) Matthews. John attended St. Helena's Elementary School in the Olney section of Philadelphia and graduated from Cardinal Dougherty High School in 1961. He worked as a foreman in the defense mapping agency at the Naval Supply Depot in Philadelphia for 36 years and most recently for Liz Claiborne in Mt. Pocono. John volunteered for the Clymer Library and Meals on Wheels. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. In addition to his wife Beverly, he is survived by three sons: John Matthews, Jr. and his wife Judy, Christopher Matthews and his wife Christina and Jesse Matthews ; three sisters: Therese Muller and her husband John, Betty Pettit and Isabel Phayre and her husband Ken; Seven grandchildren: Brenden, Sean, Kelsey, Katerina, Paige, Christopher and Delaney. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Edward and James Matthews. Reverend Wayne Kaufman will conduct a funeral service on Wednesday, November 4 at 11:00 am at the Faith Lutheran Church, Route 940, Blakeslee. Private cremation will follow at Bolock Funeral Home Crematory. There will be a viewing from 9:30 am until the time of the service at the church.
