Obituary of Herbert Detweiler

Reverend Herbert William Detweiler, 83, of Cresco, died unexpectedly on Saturday, May 2 at Pocono Medical Center. He was the husband of Alma (Ross) Detweiler. Born in Ohio, he was the son of the late Milo and Flora (Arms) Detweiler. Herbert entered into the Marine Corps when he was 18 years old, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. After leaving the Marine Corps., he worked as a farmer and for Agway. During the Korean Conflict, he was recalled by the Marines to serve and then studied to become a minister, preaching for 38 years, 33 years in New York, and the last five years in Poplar Valley. Herbert served in the Marine Corps for eleven years and was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps League in East Stroudsburg. He was the founder of the Shepherds in Monroe County and the founder of C.A.M.E. (Christian Awareness Ministry Ecumenical). In addition to his wife, Alma, he is survived by a son, Ross Detweiler of Lititz; a daughter, Susan LoVerso of Clintondale, New York; three sisters, and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers. The Reverend Barbara Housley and Reverend Willmert Wolf will conduct a Memorial Service on Saturday, May 16th at 2:30 pm at the Mountainhome United Methodist Church, Rts. 390 & 191, Mountainhome. Private Cremation will have taken place at Bolock Funeral Home Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The Shepherds in Monroe County, P.O.
