Obituary of Elizabeth Joyce McCarthy

Elizabeth "Betty" Joyce McCarthy, 86, of Henryville, reunited with her beloved husband, John "Jack" McCarthy, in heaven on March 29, 2015. With him, she shared 40 years of marriage. Jack passed away in 1993. Born in 1928 in Berlin, NH, Betty was the daughter of the late Elmar and Dorothy (Buchanan) Johnson. She spent her early years living in New England before moving to New Jersey in the mid-1950's where she, along with Jack, raised their family. She worked for New Jersey Bell as a telephone operator for many years before retiring in 1985. Betty moved to the Poconos in 1996 to be closer to her family. Betty, known as "Queener" to her family, was an avid reader and loved to cook. She also enjoyed going to bingo and playing cards -especially poker- with her family and friends. Traveling was another favorite activity of Betty's, as she spent a great deal of time vacationing in Clearwater Beach Fla., Maine, the Bahamas, and St. Maarten following her retirement. Her wit and candor will be lovingly missed by those closest to her. Betty is survived by her dear children: David McCarthy of N.Y., Cynthia Finno and her husband, Robert of Henryville; grandchildren: Jennifer Bayer and her companion, Michael, Jacquelynne Ludka and her husband, Kristopher all of East Stroudsburg; five great-grandchildren: Zachary and Nathan Bayer, Annabelle, Stephen and Elizabeth Ludka and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her sister Loverne Bailey. Betty cherished her dear pets and leaves behind a poodle named Velcro and a cat named Bear. There will be a visitation from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, at Bolock Funeral Home, 6148 Paradise Valley Road, Cresco. Reverend Brian Nichols will conduct a funeral service at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Keokee Chapel Cemetery. Private Cremation has been entrusted to Bolock Funeral Home Crematory.
