Obituary of Lyman Lewis Parks, III

Lyman Lewis Parks, III, 80, died Sunday, May 3, 2015 at Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg. He was the loving husband of Charlotte (Robacker) Parks. Born in Elizabeth, N.J., he was the son of the late Lyman L. Jr. and Flora Parks. "Lew" lived in Westfield and graduated from Westfield High School in N.J. He joined the New Jersey Bell Telephone Company right after graduation from Rutgers University as a Mechanical Engineer. He began his career in the Telephone Industry designing building air conditioning and plumbing systems. He became a Licensed Professional Engineer in 1960. He received a Certificate in Fire Protection Technology from Newark College of Engineering in 1974 while on assignment with AT&T. After completing his rotational assignment with AT&T Lew rejoined NJ Bell and became Director of Building Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and continued in that position during the Bell System breakup and the information of Bell Atlantic. He retired as Director, Real Estate after 36 years of service in 1991. Lew then joined Bellcore as Manager of Building Standards and Codes, Fire safety. In this position he represented the seven Regional Bell Operating Companies at various building code and standards organizations. He became a member of the National Electrical Code Committee by furthering research on smoke detection systems and their Protection Engineers. He held several offices in the Chapter including two terms as President. In 1997 he was elected to the grade of Fellow in the SFPE. Lew retired Bellcore in July of 1996. The family lived in Cranford, N.J. for 35 years until retirement. Lew and his wife, Edythe moved permanently in 1997 to Canadensis, P.A. where he has been active as an elder of the Canadensis Moravian Church and was Camp President for the local Gideons. Edythe predeceased Lew in June 2003. He is survived by his second wife, Charlotte, and his daughters, Deidre E. Buchner of Roselle, N.J., Elizabeth A. Parks of Cranford, N.J.; stepdaughters, Nancy Seese of Palmer Lake, CO, Barbara Riede of Sharon Springs, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandson. There will be a Celebration of Life Service on May 9th at the Canadensis Moravian Church at 2 P.M. at the church on Rt. 447. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Lew's honor may be made to; Canadensis Moravian Church and/or Gideon’s International.
