Obituary of Reverend Russell E. Walters, Jr.

Reverend Russell E. Walters, 85, of Canadensis, died Tuesday, September 22 at home. Russell was retired Pastor of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church and the former EUB church for more than 50 years. He was the oldest of six children born to Ruby and Russell Walters. Russell was born on February 22, 1930 in Palmyra. He graduated from Lower Paxton High School class of 1947, Lebanon Valley College and United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH. Russell served as Pastor of Orwigsburg, Tamaqua, Wisconisco-Williamstown, Philadelphia Olney, Allentown Salem, Keokee Chapel and Swiftwater and after his first retirement he served the Canadensis Church part-time. He was also the director of the Pocono Outpost camp on Beartown Road in Canadensis for its entire existence. During his ministry he also served his conference in many areas including director of Childrens Work, Director of Camping, History and Archives and the Conference Board of Trustees. Russell also believed in and promoted to the fullest the Heifer Project. He was very much involved in helping to turn the Cresco Train Station into a museum and spent much time working on its completion. Russell was honored as "Citizen of the Year" in 2003 by the Barrett Rotary for his work in the community. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary, who he called his first love and only love. Also three daughters, Debra Fulmer (Perry), Donna Beach (companion Dan), and Diane Peters (Morgan); son, David Walters (Dawn); five grandchildren, Bryan and Matthew Fulmer, Amanda Brohel (Brian), Caitlin Beach and Nicole Vercruyssen (Matt); seven great-grandsons; three brothers, John, Jim and Fred Walters; two sisters, Rose Blessing and Linda Mears as well as many nieces and nephews. There will be a visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, September 25 at Faith United Methodist Church, 1160 Clause Drive, Stroudsburg. The Reverend Candy Labar will conduct a memorial service at 11 at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Russell may be made to the Visiting Nursing Association of Monroe or the Faith United Methodist Church. Private cremation has been entrusted to Bolock Funeral Home Crematory.
