Obituary of Thomas J. Lewis
Thomas J. Lewis, 92, of Bethlehem, formerly from Mountainhome, passed away on Jan. 8, 2016, at Saucon Valley Manor in Hellertown.
Tom was born in Pocono Pines to Joseph and Barbara Lewis on Dec. 12, 1923. He was the oldest male of 10 children.
He served in the U.S. Army in World War II and was a decorated veteran earning a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars, as well as other awards and recognitions.
He was a lifelong businessman, founding Lewis’ Supermarket in 1946, which still operates today by second and third generation family members.
Tom really enjoyed golf, billiards, and poker with his buddies, and watching baseball. He was a founding and lifelong member of the Evans-Blitz, Post 922 American Legion in Canadensis.
Tom is survived by his four sons and their spouses: Joseph and Kristen Lewis of Bethlehem; Thomas and Judy Lewis of Lakeworth, Florida; Michael and Donna Lewis of Venice, Florida; and David and Pam Lewis of Lake Wallenpaupack. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers and their wives, Norman and Rose Lewis, William and Beverly Lewis, all of Luzerne County; and a sister, Marjorie Lewis of Pocono Pines.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Margaret M. Lewis, three sisters and three brothers.
The Rev. Fr. John Boyle will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, at Villa of our Lady Chapel, 245 Meadowside Road, Mount Pocono. There will be a viewing from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Bolock Funeral Home, 6148 Paradise Valley Road, Cresco.
Memorial donations may be made to Most Holy Trinity Church, 236 Route 390, Cresco, PA 18326.
