Obituary of Jackie Robinson Torrence

Jackie "Jack" Robinson Torrence, 63, of Tobyhanna, succumbed to cancer at Lehigh Valley Hospital Pocono on Sunday, July 23, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. He was the loving husband of Janice (Hall) Torrence with whom he shared 40+ years together.


Born in Harlem, New York, he was a son of the late Harold and Gloria (Eddy) Torrence.


Jack was raised in the boroughs of Brooklyn, Bronx and Queens, New York. He attended New York City Public Schools and City College of New York. After marriage, Jack moved back to Brooklyn, New York, specifically the neighborhood of Red Hook. He and his wife, Janice moved to Tobyhanna in September 1995. Jack commuted to work at Island Auto Group of Staten Island leaving from the Poconos at 3 a.m. daily.


In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Andrey Torrence of New York City, Cinnamon Gibson and her husband, Leroy of Tobyhanna, Teiara Torrence and Tana Torrence both of New York; grandchildren: Shanese, Somaya, Tashani, Tehmir and Briyani; brothers: Leo Durocher Torrence of New York City; Ronald Torrence and his wife, Gina of California; Louie Torrence and his wife, Cheryl of New York City; sisters: Juanita Byrd of Charlotte, North Carolina; Jacqueline Pina-Torrence of Tampa, Florida; Deborah Scales and her husband, Carson of Buffalo, New York; Tracy Torrence of Bronx, New York; sister-in-law; Gwendolyn Torrence of New York City; also a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, friends and co-workers.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his four siblings; Harold "Petey" Torrence, Willie Mays Torrence, Gloria "Buttons" Torrence and Lorraine Sang.


There will be a viewing from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 29 at Bolock Funeral Home, 6148 Paradise Valley Road, Cresco. A service will begin at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Tannersville Union Cemetery.
