Joan Ruvane through marriage is the maternal aunt of my husband, George (Geordie) Mckelvey. When George and I were newly wed we lived in the Raleigh/Durham area of North Carolina. Uncle Joe and Aunt Joan took us under their wing and from time to time had invited us for a meal in their home. Aunt Joan was always so kind and it was wonderful to be in her company. Our second child has Joan's maiden name as a middle name. I know this is a great loss to her loved ones. I pray that God wipes your tears with time and that in knowledge of Christ's love the promise to reunite again shall be fulfilled. Blessings, Joy Underwood Mckelvey.

Over 10 years ago after I retired, I started following Duke University's Women's Golf team. One of the first
people I remember meeting was Joan. I never knew when I might see this familiar face, but do not recall her
ever missing a tournament at Findley now known as the Ruth Chris Tarheel Invitational. It was always such
a pleasure to see her and chat with her. I do not recall ever seeing her when she had anything other than a
smile on her face. One of my last memories was seeing her standing under the tree behind the 18th hole at
Findley pulling her "dog-eared" set of rules out and once again checking out some rule. I am willing to wager
that before Joan could get through the "Pearly Gates," she was stopped by Saint Peter who requested that
she explain some obscure golf rule to him.
Rest in peace, Joan. I will miss you and your hug in October when I once again return to Findley.

Many years ago, a wonderful, persistent lady began to hang around the golf shop and the office doors of our two golf programs at Duke University, offering to help in any way she could. Joan was caring, persistent (occasionally, splendidly annoying), and full of life! Coach Rod Myers and I took full advantage of Joan's voluntarism! It wasn't easy work. Joan marked the golf course for our collegiate tournaments, then conducted the rules for the events. Since those days, Joan and I remained good friends, often meeting up at national championships to watch a little golf together, share a meal, and drink some wine! The last time I saw Joan was at the Women's US Open, in July. Of course, she drove herself there, walked around a hilly course in the heat, and drove home - no different than her many solo trips, back and forth from NC to PA. Joan had an independence about her that I most admired.
Thank you Joan, for being my good friend and for showing me the way!

What an amazing woman. I'm saddened by her passing but so grateful that she touched my life. Joan was a dear friend who always made me laugh. I think I'll play some golf today in her honor. My most sincere condolences to the family.

What a great life! Mom, you were remarkable in so many ways. You touched so many lives! Thanks for sharing with me James Dodson's book "A Son of the Game" before we took a few generations of family members to visit Pinehurst NC - where you got to share more history and more of those valuable life lessons. My goal is to stick around and play a lot more Donald Ross golf courses, so when we tee it up again you won't have to give me strokes based on my Handicap Index. Much-Love!!!
