Obituary of Walter Spencer
Walter Spencer, 94, of Pocono Summit, died on Thursday, January 17, 2013 in East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Rita (Treiber) Spencer at home.
Born in Somerville, NJ , he was the son of the late Eugene and Augusta (Novak) Spencer.
He transferred to the Tobyhanna Army Depot from the Belle Mead New Jersey Army Depot in 1953 and retired in 1981 as branch chief of the Tobyhanna Army Depot Calibration Laboratories. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in Europe during WWII. He was part of the 121st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron which fought in France and Germany, and freed King Leopold of Belgium and his family on May 7, 1945.
He enjoyed tinkering with electronics, becoming a computer geek at the ripe age of 85. He traveled extensively with his family across the country as a younger man. A handyman by nature, he was always fixing things around the house. He was a great believer in higher education, and put all his children through college. A doting grandfather and loving father and husband, he will be greatly missed.
In addition to his wife, Rita, he is survived by a son: Walter O. Spencer of Rochester Hills, MI; two daughters: Susan S. Dearden of Warrington, PA and Grace R. Romano of Blakeslee, PA, and nine grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Walter's honor to a local animal shelter.
