Obituary of Dermitt Dougherty

Dermitt Dougherty, 95, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at the VNA Hospice House of Monroe County in East Stroudsburg. She was the loving wife of the late John F. Dougherty whom she married on July 8, 1938. Born December 11, 1917 in Philadelphia she was the loving daughter to the late Jack and Sarah (Love) Dooling. A high school graduate of Palmyra, NJ she resided in Philadelphia until 1978 when she and her husband retired and moved to their home in Lake Naomi. Dermitt has always supported everyone that she touched. She and her husband were contributors to the Oblates Order and DeSales University, the school that her brother co-founded. She and her husband Johnny, enjoyed their retirement years in Pocono Pines volunteering, socializing and traveling. They took many trips around the world with friends. After her husband's passing, Dermitt moved to Vinson Hall, McLean VA to be near her sister and brother-in-law. She returned to the Pocono's in April of 2010 and resided at Pocono Lutheran Village, enjoying her time with family, especially her grandkids. During her working career, Dermitt was appointed Judge for employee complaints for the 5th Naval District, just under the Secretary of the Navy in chain of command. Her career in the workforce was one of two women supervisors and program directors at Naval Aviation Supply Office in Philadelphia. In her early years in Philadelphia during WWII, while Johnny was serving his country, she and her young son resided at the Oblates in Philadelphia. Working and living with her brother's order. A member of the Chapel Board at Vinson Hall and Treasurer for many years she was on the committee to collect and distribute monies for the annual Employee Appreciation Fund and was a bookkeeper for the resident Treasure store at Vinson Hall. Dermitt volunteered for The Laubach Literacy Program while residing in the Pocono's, where she also taught adults to read. She was an active volunteer at Clymer Library in Pocono Pines and volunteered to tutor grade school students, while living in Virginia. Her passion for reading continued even after she lost her sight to Macular Degeneration, thanks to the Library for providing talking books for the blind. She was a member of the Red Hat Lady's Society and Association of Retired Federal Employees. She was also a former member and past president of the Lionesses in Pocono Lake. She was one of the founding members of the Crafty Ladies at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish (formerly Our lady of the Lake) in Pocono Pines and served on the Lazarus Ministry. She is survived by one son: Stuart Dougherty of the Philippines (retired to);a former daughter-in-law: Janice Dougherty of Pocono Pines; grandchildren: Nicole Dougherty-Drivon and her husband Philippe Drivon of Pocono Pines, John Dougherty of Moab, UT and Mary Stuart Dougherty of the Philippines; great grandchildren: Gabrielle and Madelynn Drivon of Pocono Pines. She is also survived by nephews and nieces: Jack Ghizzoni and Maura Ghizzoni of California and Alma Jean, Jay (Berta) and Brian Dooling of Texas. In addition to her husband, John, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Most Rev. J. Stuart Dooling and Joseph Dooling; a sister: Audrey Ghizzoni and a brother-in-law: John Ghizzoni. There will be a viewing on Friday, April 26 from 10-11am at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, Pocono Pines. The Reverend Father John Boyle will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 11am following the viewing hours. Burial will follow at the Pocono Lake Cemetery.
