Obituary of Elaine Tanis

Elaine Cooney Tanis, 90 years of age, of Stroudsburg, died on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at the VNA Hospice House of Monroe County in East Stroudsburg. She was the loving wife of the late Thomas P. Tanis, Sr. Born in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late Russell Conwell and Florence Hoffman Cooney. A member of Trinity Episcopal Church, in Mount Pocono, PA she was also a member of the Daughter's of the American Revolution, the Mayflower Society, Phi Kappa Beta Society and the Buck Hill Falls Art Association. Elaine was the grandniece of the late Dr. Russell H. Conwell who had founded Temple University and the Baptist Temple in Philadelphia, PA. She was a volunteer at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, PA for many years and spent her childhood and adult summers in Buck Hill Falls, PA. She is survived by a daughter: Elizabeth Tanis Casciano and her husband Anthony of Stroudsburg, PA; a son: Thomas P. Tanis, Jr. and his wife Janet of Front Royal, VA; three grandchildren: Courtney Tanis Kerwin, Ashley Lyon Tanis, Amy Rose Casciano; a great grandson: Rylan Scott Kerwin and eight nieces: Donna Kelley Erb, Robin Kelley Collier, Karen Kelley Skeehan, Shari Starr Turner, Elizabeth Starr Thomas, Cindy Starr Bertram, Linda Louise Starr, Debbie Starr Higgins and a nephew: Christopher Hann. In addition to her husband, Elaine was preceded in death by a son: David Tanis and two sisters: Suzanne Kelley and Althea Hann. There will be a viewing on Wednesday, May 15 from 9-11am at Trinity Episcopal Church in Mount Pocono, PA. The Reverend Father, Robert Criste-Troutman will celebrate a Mass of Christian burial at 11am at the church following the viewing hours. Burial will take place at Laurelwood Cemetery in Stroudsburg, PA at the convenience of the family.
