Obituary of John Betham III
John Betham III, 91, of Pocono Summit, died on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at his daughter's home with her by his side. He was the husband of the late Marie (Johnson) Betham. They spent 62 years of enduring love and happiness. He missed her so; and, spoke of her every day.
John was born in Philadelphia, the only son of the late John and Matilda (Wexler) Betham.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II on submarines, as a hard hat diver and on troop transports, his the first transport to hit the beach on Guadalcanal. He was of the Lutheran faith and a member of St Paul in Tannersville. John was a standout member of his community working as a Highway Patrol officer with the Upper Darby Police Department until his retirement in 1978. His loyalty to protect and serve never wavered and continued throughout his lifetime. He and Marie owned and operated the J & M Gun Shop in Drexel Hill.
He is survived by his only child, Janet Betham of Pocono Summit.
Pastor Thomas Richards will conduct a Celebration of John and Marie's lives together on Saturday, February 15th, 2014 at noon at St. Paul Church, Fish Hill Road, Tannersville. Friends and family may gather at 11:00 am until the time of the service at noon.
