Obituary of Michael Shannon

Sgt. 1st Class Michael P. D. Shannon, 52, of Canadensis, died Sunday, January 17 while serving in Kabul, Afghanistan. Born in Queens, NY, he was the son of Lorena (Davis) Shannon of Canadensis and the late Detroyee Shannon. After graduation from high school, he attended Morgan State University. In 1976, he enlisted in the U. S. Army and served for six years on active duty and then joined the Army Reserve. In 1982 he joined the New York City Department of Correction, as a Correction Officer. Michael received several promotions; in 1989 he was promoted to Captain and 1991 to Warden Level 1. Michael received his B.S. from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, N.Y. and his M.S. from Long Island University in Brookville, N.Y.. During his career with the U.S. Army and The N.Y.C.D.O.C. he received numerous medals, awards and citations. He was activated during Desert Storm and Operation Endeavor. Michael was currently serving in the United States Army with the HQ HHC Seventh AR Unit, Kabul, Afghanistan. He was a member of the New York City Civil Servants Association, Prince Hall Lodge No. 38 F. & A.M. in New York, N.Y., and the Retired Law Enforcement Officers Association. He is survived by his wife Donna (Martin) Shannon and four children: Rhea, a senior at Howard University, Michel'le, a freshman at Allegheny Community College , son, George-William all of Canadensis, and an adopted daughter, Roslyn Josephs of Baldwin, LI,NY; two brothers, Walter Shannon of LI, NY and John Shannon of Aurora, IL; one sister, Dedra Shannon of Lakeview, LI,NY, mother and father in law, Pat and Charles Estes of Jim Thorpe; two God-children, Chriscelle Selden and Yakemia Harris, both of Rockville Center, NY; several nieces and nephews, and a host of cousins and many friends. There will be a viewing on Monday, January 25 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bolock Funeral Home, corner of Routes 940 & 390 in Paradise Valley. The Reverend George Alt will conduct a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 26 at the Canadensis United Methodist Church, Routes 390 & 447 in Canadensis, Pa. Private cremation is entrusted to the Bolock Funeral Home Crematory.
