Obituary of George Leonard
George Wilson Leonard, 77, of Tobyhanna, died Sunday morning, September 6 at home. He was the husband of Luella J. (Scheurer) Leonard, to whom he was married to for 57 years on August 30.
Born in Mountaintop, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Anna (Gleoggler) Leonard. George graduated from the Coolbaugh High School and was a member of St. Ann's Church in Tobyhanna. He was also a member of the Horseless Carriage Club of America and the Antique Auto Club of America.
George was one of the first drivers for the ambulance and fire departments in Coolbaugh Twp. before they became chartered. He worked numerous jobs in life which included: the construction crew that built the Tobyhanna Army Depot, worked for Andy Inserell in Tobyhanna as a machinist, with PennDot during the Year 55 flood where he was trapped on a bridge, for J.A. Reinhardt in Mountainhome as a machinist, then owned and operated Leonards General Store in Tobyhanna for 10 years. He was then the Roadmaster and Supervisor for Coolbaugh Twp. for 2 years. George retired and travelled the U.S. and Canada in an RV. He also resided in Bonita Springs, Florida during the winters for 17 years.
George was a sportsman who enjoyed several hobbies, including restoring everything old, from watches to antique cars and anything in between.
He often said that he was blessed by God to be able to accomplish all that did through his life here on earth.
In addition to his wife, Luella, George is survived by six children: Lawrence J. Leonard and his wife Joyce of North Carolina, George F. Leonard and his wife Mary of Tobyhanna, Christine A. Smith of California, Geraldine M. Beehler of Tobyhanna, John M. Leonard and his wife Tatiana of North Carolina, Paul R. Leonard and his wife Sandra of Tobyhanna; one sister: Elizabeth Chepules of Indiana; twelve grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers: William and Donald Leonard.
There will be a viewing on Thursday, September 10 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at the Bolock Funeral Home, corner of Routes 940 and 390, Paradise Valley.
Bishop John M. Dougherty, Ret. and Reverend Father Joseph Kopacz will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, September 11 at 10 am at St. Ann's Church, Main St. Tobyhanna. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Route 435, Moscow.
