Obituary of Donald Oliver

Donald E. Oliver, 84, of Canadensis, died on Wednesday, April 4, 2007 at Pocono Medical Center. He was the husband of the late Edna May (Ward) Oliver, who died in April of 2005. They shared nearly 60 years of marriage. Born in Wilkes-Barre, on December 1, 1923 to the late Franklin J. Oliver and Bertha (Fenner) Oliver Andrews, he was the loving stepson of the late Sidney (Sid) Andrews. His family moved to Plainfield, New Jersey, when he was a teen where he attended Plainfield High School. He was also a student at Coughlin High School in Wilkes-Barre, where he was a member of the cheerleading squad. Donald joined the U.S. Army in World War II and served in the European Theatre until the end of the war. He then joined the National Guard and was honorably discharged in October 1952 as a Sergeant First Class. He was a proud veteran and life member of the V.F.W. He started his own tile business and was self-employed for ten years before joining the engineering department at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, New Jersey. He retired from the hospital after many wonderful years of service. Everyone at the hospital knew when Don was coming through the hospital because of his happy whistling. He was a member of the Elks Lodge of Tom's River, New Jersey and was chairperson of the Veterans Committee for many years. He accomplished great strides toward helping Veterans of all wars. He loved hunting in Maine with his good friends with whom he spent many years sharing laughter and memories. Don was truly a man who loved his family and country. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him and whose lives were touched by knowing him. He is survived by his daughter, Carol Mortimer of Canadensis, with whom he resided, three grandchildren, Lisa Mortimer and her fiance, Christopher Keaton of Louisiana, Lori Folenta and her husband, James of Promised Land, Richard (Tuck) Mortimer of Canadensis; three great grandchildren, Charlie Mae Keaton of Louisiana, Andrew and James Folenta of Promised Land; many special nieces and nephews, Donald and Anita, Richard and Dolores; and especially his pal, Ramble. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Franklin and Robert, and his sister, Marion Dougert. The Reverend Dean Easton will conduct a Memorial Service at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2007 at the Canadensis Moravian Church. There will be a visitation from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service. Cremation services were entrusted to the Bolock Funeral Home Crematory in Paradise Valley.
