Obituary of David Guthrie
David Gordon Guthrie, 87, of Middlebranch Farm and Spruce Mountain, passed away on Monday evening, November 5, 2007 following a courageous battle with illness.
On February 27, 1920, David, also known as Gordon, "Guf", and sometimes "Goof" was born at Buck Hill Falls to David Guthrie, Buck Hill's golf pro, and Mary Gordon Guthrie. After his birth, they returned to Prestwick, Scotland, returning to Buck Hill in the summers. Later on, he lived in Buck Hill Falls in the summer and Hamilton, Bermuda in the winter.
David attended British schools in the winter, Barrett school in the spring and fall and was a graduate of Barrett School. His path in life was interrupted by World War II when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He became a pilot and was stationed in Burma where his small unit became known as the "jungle angels." On November 11, 1944, his plane crashed and his injuries eventually forced him home. He remained in the Air Force reserves until 1961.
David married Hazel Price on March 15, 1947, and they enjoyed almost 60 years together. He obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Education from East Stroudsburg University and later received a Master's Degree from Lehigh University. He was employed as a Teacher, Assistant Principal, and Principal for Pocono Mountain School District for 25 years. After retiring from education, he worked for a decade at the Tobyhanna Army Depot, and then spent the last 15 years as Barn Manager for Middlebranch Farm. David Gordon Guthrie will be remembered as a great gentleman, golfer, educator, hunter, storyteller, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was truly a man for all seasons.
He is survived by two daughters, Loree Guthrie and Mary Guthrie, and two granddaughters, Alexandra and Amanda. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel and his two sisters, Elizabeth Smith and Martha Wycoff Albert.
The Reverend George Alt will conduct a memorial service on Monday, November 19 at the Canadensis United Methodist Church at 7:00 PM. There will be a visitation from 6:00 PM until the time of service at the church. Cremation services were entrusted to the Bolock Funeral Home Crematory, Paradise Valley.
