Obituary of Edward Norman Lewis

Edward Norman Lewis, aka “Hungry Ed,” 86, of East Stroudsburg, passed away on Sept. 7, 2018, at the Valley View Nursing Center, Montoursville. He was the husband of the late Edith Lewis.

Edward was born Aug. 24, 1932, to the late Edward and Emma (Newhart) Lewis at his childhood home in Pocono Pines. He graduated from Tobyhanna Township High School, Pocono Pines.

Ed had a lively childhood growing up with his brothers, Tom and John Lewis, above his family’s candy store. Ed grew up working with his family to run their candy store and soda fountain, wholesale fresh fruit and produce business, and later on, their general store. He jokingly claimed that his first words were “That will be $2 and 49 cents please!” In 1966, anticipating the growth in population that was to occur in the Poconos, he opened his own full-scale grocery and hardware store, The Hungry Ed, in Pocono Lake. This rapidly became a staple for those living “on top of the mountain” for many years. Following the sale of his business, he became a manager at the then newly opened ShopRite store in Stroudsburg, until retirement in 1995.

Ed was married for 24 years to Sarah Evelyn Lewis (Unger) (deceased) of Brooklyn, New York. Together, they had five children. His pride in these children was something he spoke of often throughout his life.

In 1989, Edward married Edith Hoffman (deceased). They shared a love for travel, gardening and the company of their family, particularly that of their grandchildren.

In “retirement,” Ed was never content to be idle. Busier than ever, he sold blinking buttons and other light up promotional items manufactured by his son, Buz’s, company; volunteered for the American Heart Association and American Cancer Society; served as president of the Married Singles Club; and partook of many of the adult education offerings (TOALC) at East Stroudsburg University. Especially enjoying creative writing, he nurtured this talent later in life.

An award-winning dahlia gardener, he lectured on the subject across the country. He had a passion for food and its preparation that impacted all those around him — especially his family, for whom he loved to cook. Ed relished the outdoors, taking his children summer camping to Lost Lakes, and on winter sled rides to Davy’s Run. Enthusiastically downing trees with his trusty chain saw alongside his good friend, Jim Warner, hiking Mount Washington with his granddaughters, and tossing endless sticks for beloved dogs were but some of Ed’s sources of enjoyment. Above all, Ed delighted in telling jokes — inserting them avidly into conversation — sometimes to the groans of his children.

Edward is survived by his daughters: Dr. Kathleen Lewis and her husband, Dr. Charles Burzynski, of Williamsport, and Dr. Jani Lewis and her husband, Mark Mogavero, Esq., of Geneseo, New York; two sons: Edward “Buz” Lewis and his wife, Beth Ann, of Brownsburg, Indiana, and Daniel Lewis and his wife, Kristen, of Indianapolis, Indiana; granddaughters: Jennifer Lewis Muzillo (Anthony), Kathleen Lewis Walsh (Matthew), Sarah Lewis Catron (Jared), Elizabeth Burzynski Chang (Chris), Elyse Burzynski Easson (John), and Dr. Caitlin Burzynski; his grandson, Zachary Mogavero; and four great-grandsons: Anthony James and Max Muzillo, and Maddox and Lewis Walsh.

Edward was preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn (Unger) Lewis; his second wife, Edith (Hoffman) Lewis; stepson Glenn Hoffman; son, James (Jim) Lewis; brothers John and Thomas Lewis; half-brother Leslie Miller; and his parents, Edward and Emma Lewis.

A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at Bolock Funeral Home, 6148 Paradise Valley Road, Cresco. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Church of St. Maximilian Kolbe, 5112 Pocono Crest Road, Pocono Pines.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in memory of Edward Lewis either to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
